The 1950s were a decade of heavy glamour on the silver screen, with melodious songs and melodramatic plots that resonated with India’s growing middle class. These melodramas, which were called ‘soorma’ in Hindi film circles at the time, propagated values like family honour (and the importance of respecting elders), education (especially for girls), and modesty. One such soorma was Devdas by Bimal Roy, which had its premiere at Bombay’s Regal Cinema on October 1st 1955. Devdas was adapted from Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Bengali novel of the same name. The story is narrated by Chunnibabu, the son of the village headman who in turn becomes Devdas' companion in his "exile". The film's protagonists are Devdas (played by Dilip Kumar), Parvati (played by Suchitra Sen) and Chandramukhi (played by Nargis). Devdas was set in rural India during the 1920s, but made for an urban audience. Unlike its novelistic source, it did not dwell on class conflict or British colonialism. Instead, Bimal Roy crafted a story about two lovers who belong to families headed by father figures obsessed with honour. Devdas is a student in Calcutta, and his father sends him home after he is caught drinking alcohol at a social. On the train back to his village, Devdas meets Paro (Suchitra Sen), who belongs to a different caste. They fall in love, but her father has already promised her to another man. After many tragic turns in Devdas's life, he finally collapses into alcoholic despair when Paro marries the man she was promised to. Bimal Roy’s creative depiction of this iconic novel gave birth to an entire new genre in Indian films—the cinema of romance—and also an entire new industry around it—Bollywood. Bimal Roy began his career as an actor in silent films and also produced and directed two of them: "Sukh Dukh" (1931) and "Dharti Ke Lal" (1935). He joined the Bombay Talkies studio and made his directorial debut with the social problem film "Parineeta" (1942). It is considered a precursor to his masterpiece, "Do Bigha Zameen" (1953), which examined the Indian caste system through the story of a sharecropper, Hari. His next film, "Devdas", was his biggest commercial success. The depiction of the eponymous character in Devdas is an antihero. He is a wealthy aristocrat who abandons his family's traditional values and lifestyle, but is still able to be redeemed by love for his childhood friend Paro, played by Suchitra Sen. Devdas meets Paro when he returns to his village of Baroda after being chosen to represent their estates at the upcoming provincial assembly elections. He initially spends time with Paro's family, but gradually becomes attracted to her.
